Lakes, Land, and People of the Upper Midwest

July 20 - July 27

Lakes, Land, and People of the Upper Midwest

Program Leader: Sean Dunham

Are you curious about the cultural and ecological history of the upper Midwest, especially the Chippewa National Forest/Leech Lake Reservation and Star Island? Some of the topics we’ll explore include the history and archaeology of the National Forest and Reservation; the hydrological history of Cass Lake and the upper Mississippi River; the pre-European-settlement fire history on Star Island; and how archaeologists examine the past.

Sean is the archaeologist at the Chippewa National Forest and has spent most of his career pursuing archaeology in the north woods of Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin.  His research examines the relationship between people, their culture, and their environment. Sean plans to share some of that experience with you, hoping it will provide you with a further connection with Star Island. He is also a member of the Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Bemidji, MN.
